Name 2 of the 72 names of God is the Hebrew triplet ילי, spelled as the letters Yod-Lamed-Yod. It is one of 72 three-letter groups that Jewish and Hermetic tradition derives from the Book of Exodus. This page sets out its letters, its source, its traditional angel and Psalm verse, and the way Luckwell draws it on a sigil.

The three letters and their values

The Name is made of Yod (י), Lamed (ל) and Yod (י). Under standard Hebrew gematria the values are 10, 30 and 10, which gives a total of 50. The Golden Dawn convention, as summarised in the Hermetic Qabalah article, attaches a zodiac sign, a tarot trump and a King-scale colour to each letter:

These are archive entries, not statements about anyone's life. In Jewish practice the triplets are not pronounced as words, so Luckwell spells them as letter names. The pronunciation aid we use is Luckwell's own choice: YOD, LAH-med, YOD.

Where the Name comes from

The tradition takes its 72 Names from Exodus 14:19–21. Each of those three verses has 72 letters. The second verse (verse 20) is read in reverse, a boustrophedon arrangement, and the letters are then taken in columns: column 2 gives Name 2. The derivation is described in the Wikipedia article on Shem HaMephorash and in a Chabad.org article. The full story of the method is on the page 72 Names from Exodus.

A few triplets occur twice in the list: #1 and #49, #11 and #17, and #14 and #55. Name 2 is not among them, but Luckwell still keys every Name by its number, never by its letters alone.

The angel, the rank and the Psalm verse

Reuchlin (1517) gave each Name an angel name, and the later Rudd tradition paired each Name with a Psalm verse. For Name 2 the angel is Jelial, of the choir of Seraphim. The Seraphim hold Names 1 to 8 in the sequence of nine choirs. The paired verse is Psalms 22:19.

Luckwell attaches a short internal tag to this Name, "release/past". It is a routing label of Luckwell's own choosing, derived for sorting, and not a traditional title or a claim about what the Name does.

Which intentions Luckwell routes here

Luckwell sends two of its twelve intentions to this Name: travel and release. When someone picks one of them, this Name may be the one chosen for their sigil. The choice is stable for that person and that intention. For the travel side of the pairing, see the sigil for direction.

On the finished sigil the three letters sit on the outer ring. The same three letters are also traced on the kamea, the magic square, in the accent colour, so the Name appears twice: once as written letters and once as a line drawn across the square.

How Luckwell builds it

The Name belongs to one layer of the sigil, the outer ring. The engine picks it by a hash of the birth date and the intention, within the subset of Names assigned to that intention. The same person with the same intention therefore always receives the same Name.

The engine converts the letters to numbers using Hebrew gematria (mispar hechrechi). It reduces any number larger than n² by Aiq Bekar, which means dropping trailing zeros until the value fits the square. It then joins the cell centres with straight segments. A small circle marks the first cell, a short bar marks the last, and a loop marks a repeated cell. Because Yod appears twice, this Name returns to the same cell, so expect a loop in the trace. The other layers of the sigil are separate: the letter core from the owner's name, the rune and zodiac seal, and the ring colour. If you want to see where this Name would land for you, you can forge your own sigil.

FAQ

What is the gematria of ילי?

Yod is 10, Lamed is 30 and the second Yod is 10, so the total is 50. This is the standard Hebrew value, as listed in the sources below.

Who is the angel of Name 2?

The Reuchlin tradition gives Jelial, ranked among the Seraphim. The verse paired with the Name in the Rudd tradition is Psalms 22:19.

Is Name 2 one of the duplicate triplets?

No. The duplicates are #1 and #49, #11 and #17, and #14 and #55. Name 2 is unique, though Luckwell keys all Names by number anyway.

Should I say the Name aloud as a word?

Jewish practice does not pronounce the triplets as words. Luckwell spells them as letter names, using its own pronunciation aid: YOD, LAH-med, YOD.
