A luck sigil is a personal sign drawn from old symbol systems and kept as a focus for good fortune. This page sets out what the archive says about it: the planet Jupiter, its four-by-four square, a short set of Hebrew letters, a rune and a Latin motto. It describes tradition and art, not an effect on anyone's life.

What a luck sigil is

In Austin Osman Spare's 1913 Book of Pleasure, a sigil condenses a statement of desire into a single monogram. Peter Carroll's Liber Null & Psychonaut (1987) and Frater U.D.'s Practical Sigil Magic (1990) later systematised the method. The sign is something to look at and then set aside. It is not a promise.

A luck sigil is simply a sigil whose stated intention is Luckwell's word "Luck". Luckwell's own phrase for it is "a focus for good fortune". The sign records your attention and the sources it was drawn from, and nothing more.

Which planet and why

Luckwell routes the intention Luck to Jupiter (Latin Iuppiter, ♃), with the Sun as an alternative. The routing is Luckwell's choice, built on older tables. Jupiter is traditionally associated with Thursday, the sefirah Chesed, the colour blue and the metal tin in the Key of Solomon. Agrippa gives silver for the same table.

Agrippa (Three Books of Occult Philosophy, II.xxii) lists the fortunate virtues of Jupiter as: gain, riches, favour, love, peace, concord; appeases enemies; confirms honours. The Key of Solomon (I.2, Mathers 1889) assigns Jupiter these operations:

The Key's Jupiter pentacles carry two purposes that Luckwell quotes for this intention: Jupiter 2, "all kinds of good", and Jupiter 7, "against poverty". These are the wording of the old text. They are not claims about what a drawing does. The planet itself has its own page: Jupiter in the archive.

The kamea, the letters and the 72-Name subset

Jupiter's kamea, or magic square, has order 4. Its rows are 4, 14, 15, 1; 9, 7, 6, 12; 5, 11, 10, 8; and 16, 2, 3, 13. Every line adds to 34 and the whole square to 136. Agrippa associates the square with the intelligence Iophiel, יהפיאל, whose letters also add to 136. The divine names written on the table are Abba אבא (4), Hoh and Ahi (16), and El Ab אל אב (34). See the Jupiter kamea for the full square.

Luckwell converts letters to numbers with Agrippa's Latin table, or with standard Hebrew gematria. It then joins the cells of the square with straight lines. The Hebrew letter attached to this intention is Kaf (כ), value 20, final form 500. In the Golden Dawn it is assigned to Jupiter, and it corresponds to the Tarot card X, Wheel of Fortune.

The intention also draws on a subset of the 72 Names (Shem HaMephorash, with the angel names and psalm references of Reuchlin 1517). Each Name is three Hebrew letters. Luckwell's data lists six for Luck, and Luckwell's own tags mark four of them as luck:

Nos. 9 (Haziel, Psalms 25:6) and 49 (Vehuel, Psalms 145:3) complete the subset under other tags. The Names are written here as letter names only.

The rune and the key

Four runes from the Elder Futhark are routed to Luck: ᚠ fehu (attested meaning "cattle"), ᛃ jēra ("year, harvest"), ᚹ wunjō ("joy") and ᛈ perþō (attested meaning unknown; modern esoteric use lists "luck, chance, mystery"). The modern uses are later readings, not attested ones.

The key, a short spoken line, is built only from fixed units:

The pronunciation aids are Luckwell's own wording. Spare's default sentence for this intention, "fortune favours me", is Luckwell's choice as well.

The daily ritual: ten seconds, say the key, forget

Luckwell follows steps 4 and 5 of Spare's method. Look at the sigil for about ten seconds. Say the key once. Then let it go: in the app the sigil is hidden until the next day. The aim is a brief, deliberate act of attention. Streaks and circles in the app are game mechanics and a record of practice, not statements about your life.

How Luckwell builds it

The sign has several layers. The letter core takes your name plus your intention sentence, keeps letters only, removes repeats and caps the count by the size of the square. Those letters become numbers and are traced on the kamea. A small circle marks the first cell, a short bar the last, and a loop a repeated cell.

For Luck, the intention then picks one of the 72 Names from the subset above. The choice is made by a hash of your birth date and intention, so it is stable for you. Its three letters sit on the outer ring and are traced on the same square in the accent colour. The centre carries the Elder Futhark rune of your name's initial, and the zodiac glyph from your birth date sits on the ring. The weekday ruler gives a secondary ring colour when it differs from Jupiter, which is why Monday's luck sigil differs from Thursday's. On the site the colours are remapped to oxidised gold on obsidian, a design choice of Luckwell's. You can forge your own luck sigil in three questions.

FAQ

Does a luck sigil change my luck?

No. It is an artwork and a focus for your own intention. Luckwell makes no claim about outcomes.

Why Jupiter for luck?

Agrippa lists gain, favour and concord among Jupiter's virtues, and the Key of Solomon lists honours and acquiring riches. Luckwell's routing of Luck to Jupiter is its own choice built on those tables.

Will I get the same sign tomorrow?

The same name, birth date, word and day give the same sign. The day plan is mirrored two times, and the week and month plans change a little each day.

Do I need to know Hebrew or runes?

No. Luckwell chooses the letters, the rune and the key units for you, and shows one source line for each layer. The archive index at Luckwell Learn explains each system.
